The CANOL Road was an adjunct to the AlCan (Alaska Highway) it served as the construction and service road for a crude oil pipelin which ran from the oil wells near Fort Norman in the Northwest Territories to a refinery in Whitehorse.
The pipeline was simply laid on top of the ground and operated just long enough to provide a single run for the refinery before it became obvious that west coast shipping was safe from attack during the war and it was cheaper to ship refined product to the Yukon and Alaska.
Most of the vehicles used during construction were abandoned in place as it was considered too expensive to haul them out for re-use. Locals were told not to salvage them, although many of the vehicles have been stripped for parts over the years.
